Oba-Me: The president’s biggest admirer is himself

Obama leaves the White House in sweatshirt and sandals -- carrying a copy of GQ with himself on the cover

Sorry for the long absence. If anyone is still sticking around to read this, thanks. I was in Michigan last weekend. I highly recommend the trip for anyone who is feeling glum about Ohio right now. Michigan has a much bigger chill, and it’s not just the winter. Nearly every headline in the Lansing paper was a grim report from a state of crisis: Jobs cut, companies leaving, taxes going up, more layoffs, an inept governor…

So, back to Ohio. I was at a dinner party for a friend’s birthday the other night and heard one of the weirdest stories I’ve come across in quite awhile.

So I decided to check it out on Google. And it’s true.

Ed Shultz, a far-left talk-show host who makes Al Franken look almost reasonable, was invited to the White House. That’s pretty strange in itself — sort of like if a Republican president invited Michael Savage to dinner.

But it was Shultz’s unintentionally disturbing description of the West Wing that really creeped me out. From Newsbusters:

SCHULTZ: First of all you walk into the White House, in the West Wing, and there are pictures all over, I mean everywhere! Of President Obama! I mean, of his life in the first year as president of the United States. Now I don’t know if that’s the way it is with every president, but it was almost a shrine. I mean, well, here’s a picture of Obama the president with his kids over here. There he is getting on Air Force One. Here he is with some military people. Here he is on the line working the line at one of his campaign stops. I mean, just, it was just one picture after another! (laughs) And so I got the message right away that there’s nothing but Obama fans in the White House which I think is a good thing. ‘Cause it’s always good to have the team together, right? (laughs)
This is beyond bizarre. Some reports say there are as many as 300 pictures of Obama on the walls — continuously updated and replaced. And “Obama fans in the White House”? Is Shultz really so dense? The biggest Obama fan in the White House is obviously Obama or something so crass would never be permitted.
As Glenn Beck and others have already pointed out, not even Clinton surrounded himself with himself. President Bush 43 decorated the White House with historic American artworks, and kept only one picture of his family on his desk.
President Reagan respected the history and dignity of the presidency so much, he left his suit-jacket on as he worked at his desk. JFK was also often pictured at his desk — wearing his jacket and tie.
It’s no surprise that someone like Shultz is such a shameless shill for Obama that he doesn’t even realize that Obama’s shrine to himself is revealing and disturbing. But why have the rest of the media failed to report this? How could they visit the West Wing and not notice the tacky “museum of me” that Obama has installed? They’ve been there before in other administrations. They must have seen the change and wondered. Is it possible to imagine that such a thing would not have been a big story if it were done by Bush or Dick Cheney?
As for the shrine itself: It shows a glaring disrespect for the history of the White House, which is after all, the people’s house, temporarily occupied by the Obamas. But this is not the first time Obama has showed disrespect for American history. He saw nothing wrong with being photographed with his feet propped up on the historic Resolute desk in the Oval Office (made from timbers of the HMS Resolute, given to President Hayes in the 1880s by the Queen of England).
Is he so self-centered and narcissistic that he can’t even see how self-centered and narcissistic he is? We could ask him to look in the mirror, but he would just fall in love again.
It’s the kind of thing that underlines and highlights his strange comments about being “the one” who can push back the seas, charm terrorists out of their caves and restore peace on Earth with a flowery speech and an obsequious bow.
It’s the kind of thing that makes you wonder: Does he really believe that hooey?  Is that why he is so defiant and rabidly partisan? Is that why he refuses to admit he is ever wrong? Is that why he showed such tight-lipped anger when Republicans laughed at his Wimpy budget freeze (“I would gladly pay you on Tuesday for two stimulus hamburgers today”).
Thanks to the sycophants in the media, we don’t know very much about Obama and his past. He has seldom been asked tough questions, or even been criticized. His political career has been an affirmative-action cakewalk with extra icing — every door open, no experience needed.
But the more we learn about this guy, the more worried I get.

Welcome back, Peter. I have been reading about the John Edwards saga and am reminded of how it is a classic textbook model of narcissism. In the future I suspect that grad students in Abnormal Psychology will use some of the politicians as case studies. We all thought we had the symptoms of every abnormal issue but that is what separates a “normally selfish” person from a “Clinical Narcissist”. They really do not see themselves as they are.

  2. Thanks for the excellent and well-informed comment, Gary. Good to hear from you and thanks for visiting!
